Essiac tea was developed by the Ontario (Canadian) Indians. The formula was given to Canadian nurse Rene Caisse in 1922 by a breast cancer patient who had been cure by an Indian medicine man.
In the early years, Caisse and Dr. R. O. Fisher of Toronto experimented in on mice with human cancer. They modified the combination of herbs to maximize efficacy.
In 1935, the Town Council of Bracebridge turned over to Rene Caisse the old British Lion Hotel for use as a cancer clinic. Until 1942, Caisse treated thousands of patients at the hotel. This arrangement was the result of Dr. A. F. Bastedo of Bracebridge who referred a terminally ill patient with bowel cancer to Caisse who of course cured him. In 1942 Caisse closed down the clinic because she feared prosecution.
Canadian nurse Rene Caisse theorized that one of the herbs in Essiac reduced tumor growth while other herbs acted as blood purifiers, carrying away destroyed tissue as well as infections related to the malignancy. She also speculated that Essiac strengthened the body's innate defense mechanisms, enabling normal cells to destroy abnormal ones as Nature intended.
In 1983, Dr. E. Bruce Hendrick, chief of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto's Children's Hospital, reported that eight of ten patients with surgically treated tumors of the central nervous system, after following an Essiac regimen, obtained remission and required no further treatment.
Document cases of remissions due to Essiac tea range in the hundreds against a wide variety of cancers. Dr. Charles Brusch a former physician to President John F. Kennedy cured his own cancer with it.
From Sheila Snow Fraser and Carroll Allen's book, "Could Essiac Halt Cancer?" (Homemaker's, June-JulyAugust 1977, p. 19.) Canadian nurse Rene Caisse observed that Essiac tea greatly alleviated pain. Many patients would report an enlarging and hardening of the tumor after a few treatments. Then the tumor would start to soften. People also frequently reported a discharge of large amounts of pus and fleshy material. Masses of diseased tissue were sloughed off in persons with breast, rectum, and internal cancers. After this process, the tumor would be gone.
Caisseand was invited to the tumor clinic at Northwestern University Medical School to treat thirty terminal cancer patients. After one and a half years, the Chicago doctors concluded that the herbal mixture "prolonged life, shrank tumors, and relieved pain."
Caisse was invited to the Brusch Medical Center in Massachusetts, where she worked with eighteen doctors. After three months, Dr. Charles Brusch the his research director, Dr. Charles McClure, concluded that Essiac "has been shown to cause a decided recession of the mass, and a definite change in cell formation" in mice. "Clinically, on patients suffering from pathologically proven cancer, it reduces pain and causes a recession in the growth; patients have gained weight and shown an improvement in their general health"

Conclusiveness of Papers
Research papers for Essiac tea are few and far between. It seems that the medical establishment is not interested in doing things right. For example, between 1973 and 1976, the Sloan-Kettering Institute tested sheep sorrel one of the herbs in Essiac. In 1975, Dr. Chester Stock, a Sloan-Kettering vice president sent Caisse encouraging the results based on the mice treated with Essiac. Caisse stopped sending the Institute any more of her formula when she learned that instead of boiling the herb, as she had instructed, the scientists were freezing it.
Essiac tea seems to have cured many people of cancer without additional supplements. However, the fact that Essiac tea seems to interfere with few other treatments (except Cancell) it appears to be a good candidate for combination with other cancer treatments.
Dosage and Ease of Use
Essiac tea is a bit time-consuming to prepare from the powder that it arrives in. However, the prepared tea can last in the refrigerator for two weeks.
People who change their eating habits greatly increase the effectiveness of the supplements they take. Consider reading the "General Diet*" subsection of the Home page.
One unit of Essiac tea power makes 72 oz of tea. Dosage varies between 4 and 9 oz. Therefore, one unit makes between 8 and 16 days of tea. Recommended minimum duration of treatment is 12 weeks. However, are other protocols that bar less aggressive. For example:
Begin at one ounce per day, gradually increasing the total amount taken by one ounce per day every 2-3 days. This gives your body time to adjust. Drink at least 1/2 to 1 gallon of water (not juice, tea or other beverage) daily to help flush the toxins from your body. Some people feel that their optimum dose is around 4-6 ounces per day—others will feel less works well for them. Some of our clients are taking 8-12 ounces per day and tolerating it well. More is not always better though. As I tell clients on a daily basis—you live in your body 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No other person can tell you which dose is best for you.
Caisse recommended six to eight Essiac tea treatments before an operation to reduce the risk of metastasizing. Regarding post operation "If there is any suspicion that any malignant cells are left after the operation, "then Essiac should be given once a week for at least three months, supplying the body with the resistance to a recurrence that is needed."
Regarding breast cancer Caisse said, "In the case of cancer of the breast, the primary growth will usually invade the mammary gland of the opposite breast or the auxilla, or both. If Essiac is administered either orally or by hypodermic injection, into the forearm, the secondary growth will regress into the primary mass, enlarging it for a time, but when it is all localized it will loosen and soften and can then be removed without the danger of recurrence."
Essiac tea may cause nausea or indigestion especially if it is taken on a full stomach. Otherwise, no side effects have been reported.
Essiac tea seems to be compatible with conventional and alternative treatments except for Cantron and Protocel. Cantron and Protocel tend to neutralize Essiac tea. This conflict with Essiac tea is also probably true for Paw Paw and Graviola also.
Essiac tea has been available since the 1920s.
Relative Cost per Month
One box makes 72 ounces. Daily dosage is 4 to 8 ounces. One box makes 9 to 18 daily doses. It takes 1.67 to 3.33 boxes for a one month supply. From essiac-resperin.com, 1.67 boxes cost (based on two boxes for $30 each) $50 and 3.33 boxes costs (based on four boxes for 28.60 each) $95.
Testimonials and Belief
Testimonials can be a very powerful tool to help in the healing process because they can boost your belief in a treatment. However, reading testimonies is a poor method of making a treatment selection. An alternative cancer treatment with only a 5% success rate can still obtain many genuine and impressive testimonials. A selected group of positive testimonials cannot compare to a published study were all of the qualified case histories are presented, the failures as well as the successes.
For the above reason, it is not a good idea to use testimonials to help you select a cancer treatment. Save testimonials for the role that they perform the best, bolstering belief after treatments have been selected. Using an Alternative Cancer Treatment Test kit is a much better method of making the treatment decision.
There are many valid alternative cancer treatments that conventional doctors cannot prescribe.
Each treatment only works on a minority of patients that try it.
The best treatment for a patient depends more on body chemistry than the type or stage of cancer.
Just because a treatment worked on someone else does not mean it will work for you.
Almost every cancer patient uses more than one alternative caner treatment. The most successful use at least one that was selected by their body. After you order Essiac, learn how to ask you body to select another cancer treatment using Applied Kinesiology. It only takes about ten minutes and you will have a skill that will help you do many things.
There is confusion regarding who owns the original formula. It appears that it is owned by Essiac Canada International of Ottawa who has various distributors. Essiac Canada International remains difficult to contact. The following sources appear to be authorized distributors:
